Free Movies: 10 Netflix alternatives to keep you entertained

The appeal of a streaming service was that it contained everything you wanted to watch in a given location, so you don’t have to worry about expensive cable packages and channels. But as more and more companies are opting for their own services, it seems like we’ve come full circle. And it doesn’t help that live streaming services like ESPN, YouTube TV and Fubo have raised prices.

Fortunately, there are still many services out there that can keep you entertained without spending a dime. Here are 10 services that offer completely free, completely legal movies you can watch smart TVs, media streamers and mobile devices. Some also offer TV programs. Just be prepared to watch commercials before streaming videos as this is how most of these services pay the bills. And don’t expect free movie download option for offline viewing. Currently, only Hoopla allows this.

Note: As the selection changes regularly, not all of the titles listed here may still be available, but we will try to update them.

Top 10 Free Movie & TV Streaming Services

Sony Crackle is an ad-supported streaming service that offers both movies and TV shows – including some original content and web series. It’s available on a wide variety of devices and doesn’t even require you to sign up for an account to watch free online movies, but it allows you to save your favorites, get recommendations, and resume playback if you switch between devices.

Highest elections: Failure, consistency

Formerly known as FreeDrive, this streaming service is part of IMDb, Amazon’s online movie database. In other words, IMDb Television is Amazon’s way of offering ad-supported video streaming independent of Amazon Prime. And IMDb TV isn’t limited to movies; TV episodes are also available. Unfortunately, there is a viewing limitation: IMDb TV is only available on PCs and the Prime Video and IMDb apps.

Highest elections: Nightcrawler, Napoleon Dynamite, Lost in Translation (and cheers for the TV series Lost and Mad Men)

Do you have a library card? Check if your library works with Hoopla. This digital media service allows you to view all kinds of content – including movies. When you “borrow” it, you have 72 hours to view it. Your library determines the total number of movies you can rent each month.

Surprisingly, Hoopla’s mobile apps not only offer streaming but also a download option for offline viewing.

Highest elections: Ex Machina, Raising Arizona and what we do in the shadows

The Internet Archive has everything in the public domain, including thousands of full-length movies. Perhaps no wonder there are no costs to using the service, or you don’t need an account (though you can create one if you want to mark favorites and the like).

“Public Domain” is the code for “old” or “mostly black and white”, making it a place for those interested in purely classic movies. This way you will find movies like His Girl Friday, Plan 9 from Outer Space and Gulliver’s Travels. However, the archive only exists on the Internet, so you’ll need a browser to access it. (Most mobile browsers should work).

If your library doesn’t offer Hoopla, maybe it does Canopies? This free (yay!) Service, which started in Australia, has made its way to thousands of university campuses around the world and, more recently, to various libraries in the US. Check the site to see if this is available from your library – and inquire about it if it is not.

Canopy offers several mainstream content, but also a good selection of indie films and documentaries such as PBS and The Great Courses. Its library also includes titles from esteemed Criteria collectionwhich is the code for “movies”. There’s also a new Canopy Kids section with loads of content for the whole family.

Highest elections: Memento, In the Mood for Love and Lady Bird

A newcomer to this list, Peacock is NBC’s streaming service – and its free tier is surprisingly generous, offering not only the obvious (TV shows) but movies you won’t find anywhere else. Sure you’ll have to put up with ad breaks, but there’s a countdown timer so you’ll know if it’s time to run to the bathroom.

Highest elections: Casino, Bruges, Jurassic Park, Actually Love, Zombieland

Platoon started life as a live streaming service that offered many “channels” of content – including a great selection of topwatchbest videos. Since that time purchased by Viacomwhich previously owned topwatchbest. While it seems to be expanding more into the live TV space with the growing number of news and sports channels, it is also home to a host of free on-demand movies.

Highest elections: Drive, The Way of the Dragon, The Terminator and Hot Rod

Roku Channel is not only a provider of free movies, but also an aggregator of new and existing free content. So, don’t be surprised if some of the free movies available on other services overlap. You’ll find videos from Roku partners like Lionsgate, MGM, Sony, and Warner, as well as free content from existing Roku channels like FilmRise, Popcornflix, and Vidmark.

Needless to say, the channel is available on Roku TVs and devices, but it’s also available on desktop browsers, on Amazon Fire TV streamers, and as an app.

Peak chooses: Caddyshack, When Harry Met Sally and Halloween

Home to thousands of free commercial movies (though definitely not ad-free), the Tubi TV streaming platform offers content from studios, including Lionsgate, MGM, and Paramount. To help separate the wheat from the chaff, check out these two categories: Highly rated on rotten tomatoes and Not on Netflix.

Highest elections: Fight Club, I’m not your Negro, Stalag 17

Walmart Vudu The video service is consistently expanding its ad section, which allows you to choose from a huge selection of Hollywood movies (mostly older titles, unfortunately) to watch at no charge. You need a Vudu account to watch free movies online, but it’s free to sign up.

Highest elections: Honestly, I had a hard time finding them
