The new operating system update, named iOS 15.4, brings the long-awaited Universal controlAirTag anti-stalking alerts, a Gender-neutral voice option for Siri, new emoticons and mask-friendly face ID for compatible iPhones. These new features also appear on iPads via iPadOS 15.4.

As the name suggests, iOS 15.4 is the fourth major update to the iOS 15which took off with iPhone 13 in September. Those updates that started in December IOS version 15.1, added more features to Apple’s iPhone operating system and improved existing ones. iOS 15.4 follows iOS 15.3.1, which was released last month for a patch vulnerability in iPhones and iPads.

When was the release date of iOS 15.4?

Both iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4 were released on March 14. New green iPhone 13, alpine green iPhone 13 Pro and new iPhone SE Apple will ship with iOS 15.4 preloaded.

How can I download iOS 15.4?

You can download iOS 15.4 by going to Settings> General> Software Update> Download and Install. Update 15.4 is more than a gigabyte, so make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi to avoid chewing up your monthly data allowance.

What is universal control?

Universal Control allows you to use other Apple devices as secondary displays, seamlessly transferring content between them with just one device. This eagerly anticipated feature was initially announced as part of Monterey’s macOS but has been delayed in the fall, with a new timeline pointing to “this spring”. Universal Control was part of the iOS 15.4 beta and was launched as a public beta with Monterey OS 12.3 and iPadOS 15.4 updates.

As Universal Control is still in beta, expect to run into some issues from time to time. Please note that this feature does not work on all devices. Apple says Universal Control is available on:

  • MacBook Pro (2016 and newer)
  • MacBook (2016 and newer)
  • MacBook Air (2018 and newer)
  • iMac (2017 and newer)
  • iMac (5K Retina 27-inch, Late 2015)
  • iMac Pro
  • Mac Mini (2018 and newer)
  • Mac Pro (2019)
  • iPad Pro
  • iPad Air (3rd generation and newer)
  • iPad (sixth generation and newer)
  • iPad Mini (5th generation and newer)

Apple notes To use Universal Control, “Both devices must be signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID using two-factor authentication. To use wireless connectivity, both devices must have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff turned on, and must be within 10 meters (30 feet) of each other. [The] iPad and Mac can’t share a cellular or internet connection. To use via USB, you have to trust your Mac on the iPad. ”

Can I use Face ID with masks?

Apple has updated the Face ID feature so that you can use it on iPhone 12 and later models, even while wearing the mask. As the feature uses a smaller part of your face to verify your identity, you need to more accurately determine the angle at which you are holding your phone when using Face ID. Your phone will even tell you to look more directly at the screen. The updated feature should work for people who wear glasses, but won’t work with sunglasses.

What new emotes are available?

If you’re someone who prides themselves on using emojis in a creative and fun way, you’ll love iOS 15.4. Are 37 new emotes in update, including new options for pregnant women, heart-shaped hands, salute and – my favorite – lip biting emoji. These were revealed last fall, and also include a melting face, a tear-holding face, a bird’s nest, a coral, a lotus, a low battery, and a bean.

Other iOS 15.4 Features

Updating the operating system also brings new ones Security oriented AirTags updateswhich came to the fore after device reports used to persecute people.

Update 15.4 also changes the five-press emergency call shortcut from the default to an option, which means the feature will not be enabled unless you choose to allow it. The option to hold and press the side and volume buttons remains on by default.

SharePlay has also received some updates, allowing some apps to start SharePlay connections from the app instead of having to start a SharePlay connection and then open the app. Developers will need to update their apps accordingly, so expect this option to roll out over time.

Another feature included in the update is the ability to copy text from objects using the camera in the Notes or Reminders applications. And, as ZDNet noted, iOS 15.4 also does Fixes a bug with Siri interaction recordings.
