Merge Away, Warner Bros. Discovery. Just don’t charge us any more for HBO Max

HBO Max and Discovery Plus will finally be broadcast in one Warner Bros. app. Discovery.

This is official. WarnerMedia and Discovery have merged into Warner Bros. Discovery. This marriage brings Warner’s movies, TV shows, channels and him HBO max. streaming service with Discovery brands. Yes, Soprano, Euphoria and Orderly they will live under the same roof as 1000-pound sisters, ancient aliens and brothers.

And just like that, all this content comes together like the new Voltron.

Excited? As an HBO Max subscriber who doesn’t care too much about Discovery shows, I’m not. Streaming TV prices are going upand I keep comparing which platform has the best returns, a rotation of fresh titles, originals, and access to new episodes.

String cutters like me mainly wonder how this fusion will affect what we spend streaming services each month. Netflix sparked outrage over this price increase earlier this year and customers started using social media, threatening to jump aboard. HBO Max sits on the same side of that expensive table, costing us $ 15 a month for the best ad-free experience and $ 10 if you don’t mind ads. Meanwhile, Discovery Plus gets 22 million subscribers for just $ 5 for the basic plan and $ 7 for the ad-free version.

Warner Bros. Discovery is going to welcome us to this connected kingdom with a la package Hulu with Disney Plus and ESPN Plus — at the beginning. Next, the plan is to create a unified streaming app with HBO Max’s gadgets on the same plate as Discovery Plus offers. But let’s be honest: I don’t want another price hike, and you probably don’t.

When Hulu added Disney Plus and ESPN Plus to its live TV packages, it came in a $ 5 increase and there is no opt-out option. Pay more and access other streaming services, whether you want to or not. Will Warner do the same?

While Discovery has a few gems in its range, not all of us satisfied HBO Max customers want access to the entire streaming catalog. I am good. If I want, I can watch Food Network or OWN programs on another streaming platform that I’m paying for. The same goes for die-hard Chip and Joanna Gaines fans who tune in on a regular basis with the Magnolia Network. Granted, you can stream episodes of 90 Day Bride and not only in the current Discovery Plus app, but many are available elsewhere.

Since I don’t watch sports, the Warner Bros. The discovery of expanding this branch of the empire does not appeal to me either. With that in mind, a few old or new content that I will never watch does not justify the higher subscription price. Paying more money is not what my dreams are made of. On the other hand, loyal Discovery Plus subscribers who don’t want or don’t have HBO Max are likely not thrilled with the possibility of coughing more than $ 5 a month.

Streaming is starting to resemble cable TV

Streaming wars have become a buzzword to describe all the media giants who become contenders for video-on-demand. Niche providers and smaller services are responsible for some of these activities, but when HBO Max entered the gladiator arena in 2020, over 10,000 hours of premium movies, shows, and originals helped her get started.

In addition to watching HBO classics such as Game of Thrones and Warner hits (Harry Potter, The Matrix), we can stream DCEU titles, Cartoon Network series such as Adventure Time and Max Originals (The White Lotus). Hence the second trendy term: Prestige Television. HBO falls into this category and that is one of the reasons people pay for it as a premium channel.

The integration of HBO Max and Discovery Plus will create a more extensive catalog, but at what cost for customers?

Discovery brands, in the US and worldwide, are the most popular as linear cable networks. This includes Lifetime, HGTV, TBS, Food Network, and A&E. It definitely does not fit into the prestigious TV category. In fact, it differs drastically from most Warner and HBO productions. Cable subscribers are pretty much focused on Discovery content, but can get HBO Max as an add-on if they wish.

As a streaming service, HBO Max has exclusive titles and all under the HBO and Warner banner. Stream your library on demand, have fun and enjoy it, no matter what your age. But along with the way these mergers go, all of these channels are bundled together into cable-like bundles where you pay for an extra set of networks that you don’t want or need. In some cases, it is better to skip the dedicated application and watch the episodes via cable or live TV streaming service like YouTube TV or Sling.

It turns into a game of who offers what and where I can find it. Cable providers have been playing it for decades, and streaming services are slowly transitioning to the same system. Throwing the same amount – or more – as I would for a cable defeats the purpose of paying for a premium streaming service.

What should Warner Bros. Discovery

The new brand media giant wants to sell to consumers the fact that there will now be over 200,000 hours of TV, movies and live shows that can be streamed on demand. This usually means a price increase. We’ve seen this before with Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu and other vendors telling us that the cost increase is necessary to give us “more value” and to finance all the new projects that are underway. Why is Warner Bros. Discovery would not follow in their footsteps in the end?

Does not have to. When package plans expire, it should either keep the same monthly prices or, I dare say, lower them. Beat existing customers with old prices and catch newbies with the promotional rate before getting them a higher monthly fee.

When it comes to organizing your application, assemble your Discovery networks into a single hub in the HBO Max App just as there are already designated hubs for HBO, Studio Ghibli, and DC. Or divide the Discovery brands into their own centers. Just don’t spam viewers with ads for all the content we don’t watch. Let the algorithm reflect what someone really wants to see.

It’s unlikely that a linked mega app would give any of us the option to opt out of certain programming – that would be a Discovery Plus feature to me – but surely these two titans can slow us down a bit by keeping them costing the same. I would not like to cancel my HBO Max.
