Choosing a new phone upgrade is almost never easy. There’s always something new around the corner in the tech world, and since Verizon and AT&T have 36-month installment plans, the phone you upgrade to is likely to be the one you’ll be using for the next few years. So trying to figure out when is the “best time” to update can be difficult.

Here are some of the phones worth paying attention to this year and when we think they may come out based on past trends and rumors.

A note on why you should buy a 2022 phone if you have AT&T

Before we move on to actual devices, it’s worth mentioning quickly why you should be looking for a 2022 device at AT&T in particular: 5G support and those long installments.

AT&T is gearing up for a major 5G update in the second half of the year that should significantly improve its services using what is known as midband. The carrier plans to extend its central networks to 200 million people by the end of next year, with download speeds routinely expected to reach several hundred megabits per second, with peaks of 1 gigabit per second.

AT&T focuses on two varieties of the mid-band spectrum, known as the C-band and 3.45 GHz. The former is what Verizon and AT&T have already begun to roll out, and are often used on 5G networks around the world, making it easy to find and incorporate into many phones already available, such as the Samsung Galaxy S21, iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, and the company’s Pixel 6. Google. The carrier already has it list of devices supporting the C band.

The 3.45 GHz spectrum, however, is not as common in today’s phones, and AT&T has not committed to upgrading earlier devices to support this network. (Which makes things a bit more confusing, AT&T calls both the midband flavors and its millimeter wave network as “5G Plus”).

Future flagship phones starting with the Galaxy S22 line (and possibly many of the phones below), they are expected to work with all AT&T 5G flavors. Since you may have a 36-month commitment after upgrading, it’s worth remembering to purchase a phone that works with all AT&T 5G variants.

While the phone is expected to retain a similar appearance to the current iPhone SE – meaning yes for the Home button and large bezels, but not for Face ID or the larger screen – it is expected to support 5G networks and have a faster processor.

It’s unclear what else Apple could change for a possible 2022 SE, but hopefully it will keep the same low starting price of $ 399.

While the iPhone SE 3 is seemingly imminent, the next major iPhone update isn’t scheduled for fall. Out of many rumors of changes and improvements for this year’s flagship line of iPhones they include regular processor and camera updates, with the Pro and Pro Max likely receiving 48 mega-pixel rear shooterscompared to the 12 megapixels found in previous iPhones.

Potentially the biggest change to the iPhone 14, however, could be the placement of the front camera on the 14 Pro and Pro Max. Rumors suggest Apple may eventually ditch the notch and opt for a pinhole or pill-shaped notch instead.

When will they come out? Apple generally announces its major iPhone updates in September.
